Terms of Use
Last updated: 6 August 2026
These terms apply when you use Totem. They are short on purpose. The most important parts are what happens to your data if you lose access to it, and the limits of what we can be responsible for.
Agreement
By downloading or using Totem (the "app"), you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app. Totem is provided by Connor Zubrecki, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Totem is distributed through the Apple App Store, so Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. Where these terms and Apple's agreement conflict, Apple's agreement governs.
Your licence
We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use Totem on Apple devices you own or control, in accordance with the App Store Terms of Service. You may not sell, redistribute, reverse engineer, or attempt to extract the source code of the app, except where that restriction is prohibited by law.
Your responsibilities
Totem stores the secrets that generate your two-factor codes. Because we have no servers and no copy of your data, some responsibilities are necessarily yours:
- Keep a backup. Use encrypted export, a recovery kit, or iCloud sync. If you lose your device with no backup, your accounts cannot be recovered.
- Keep your passphrase and recovery kit safe. They cannot be reset or recovered. We cannot decrypt your backup for you.
- Keep your device secure. Use a device passcode and, where available, biometric protection.
- Deletion is permanent. Deleting an account in Totem destroys the secret that generates its codes. There is no undo and no recovery.
Subscriptions and billing
Totem is free to use for unlimited accounts and codes. Optional paid features are offered as an auto-renewing annual subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase.
- Payment is charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase.
- An annual subscription renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of the period.
- If a free trial is offered, any unused portion is forfeited when you purchase a subscription.
- You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple ID account settings at any time.
- Prices are shown in the app in your local currency and may change. Any change applies to future billing periods, not the current one.
Refunds
Purchases are processed by Apple, and refunds are handled by Apple under its own policies. We cannot issue refunds directly. You can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something has gone wrong, please contact us as well - we may be able to help.
Acceptable use
Use Totem lawfully. Do not use it to access accounts you are not authorised to access, and do not attempt to disrupt or compromise the app or other users' devices.
No warranty
Totem is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with every device or service.
Totem implements the standard TOTP and HOTP algorithms (RFC 6238 and RFC 4226). Whether a particular service accepts the codes Totem generates depends on that service.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, loss of access to accounts, loss of profits, or loss of goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use Totem.
This includes losing access to a third-party account because a device was lost, a backup was not made, a passphrase or recovery kit was forgotten, or an account was deleted in the app. Our total liability for any claim will not exceed the amount you paid us for Totem in the twelve months before the claim.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
Changes to the app and these terms
We may update, change, or discontinue features of Totem. We may also update these terms; if we do, we will revise the date above, and material changes will be made clear in the app. Continuing to use Totem after a change means you accept the revised terms.
Termination
You may stop using Totem at any time by deleting the app. We may suspend or terminate your licence if you materially breach these terms. Sections covering warranty, liability, and governing law survive termination.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Saskatchewan and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Nothing here removes consumer protections you have under the laws of your own country.
Apple
Apple is not a party to these terms and has no responsibility for Totem. Apple is not obliged to provide support for the app. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
